Years 5 and 6 have been working hard on solving different calculations using mental maths strategies (instead of formal written methods) this week.
Of course, there's no better way to experiment than by drawing all over the windows and tables! Our children have looked at different ways to represent problems, and solve them, using different visuals and by finding different ways to make numbers 'friendlier' to work with. It's been amazing seeing the many different ways the children would solve some of these problems and listening to them explain their ideas so carefully and explicitly to others. The children have found some incredibly creative solutions working this way and challenged each others thinking which has been great to see. What amazing Maths!
