History - Maya settlers thriving in a rainforest environment

    16 January 2026 (by admin)

This week, Voyagers and Discoverers were learning about how the Maya settlers survived and thrived in the rainforest.

First, we explored the rainforest environment, using images and a short video to learn about the animals, climate, and challenges the Maya faced. The children discussed how living in such a dangerous environment required skill, adaptation, and careful use of natural surroundings.

And then we learned how the Maya changed over time from hunter-gatherers to settled farmers. We explored how they developed successful farming techniques, built shelters using natural materials, and traded valuable goods such as cacao to help their communities thrive. The children finished the lesson by working together to identify the most important factors that helped the Maya succeed in the rainforest.
