    Exploring Childhood in Maya Society

    30 January 2026 (by admin)

Today in History, we have been learning about the lives of children in Maya society. The class explored the differences between childhoods for the rich and the poor.

We began by revisiting the structure of Maya society, discussing who was the most important and which groups had the least status. The children then actively explored aspects of daily life, including education, homes, and food, using their topic books to find out information.

The focus then moved to Maya children. The class compared how rich children went to school while poorer children helped at home and followed their parents’ work. The children made links to their own lives, considering how unfair it would be today to have to do the same jobs as their parents. We also discussed how all Maya children were raised to be hardworking and responsible members of their society.

For the main activity, the children completed a table with information about rich and poor Maya children. Some then wrote diary entries imagining a day in the life of a Maya child and shared these with the class.

It was fantastic to see the children so engaged in their history learning and confidently using resources to deepen their understanding.
