ENGLISH - READING @ BISHOP
A reader from Bishopsteignton will:
- Have a secure understanding of phonics by the end of KS1
- Learn to read, regardless of their background, needs or abilities.
- Know which books they enjoy and read for pleasure.
- Have the skills needed to enable them to read to learn
To achieve our intent, we have developed our own phonics programme which ensures a systematic, consistent and challenging start to learning to read and write. 'Bishop Phonics' was created by building on the existing skills, experience and expertise of our teaching team, whilst incorporating pedagogy and resources from experts in the field of phonics.
Our Whole Class Guided Reading sessions offer children increased exposure to a broad range of challenging texts and the opportunity for class discussion. They aim to develop children's fluency and accuracy in reading whilst also developing skills in comprehension. Children are introduced to Reading Vipers in KS1 and use them all the way through to Upper Key Stage 2. VIPERS is an acronym for the 6 main reading domains and using them allows teachers to ensure children are exposed to a range of question styles about the texts they read.
In addition to these sessions, many children across the school access small group guided sessions with an adult. All of our EYFS and KS1 children read regularly with an adult on a 1:1 basis.
