To start of our 'Get inpsired' topic, the children have looked at sculptures of local artist Barbara Hepworth before then exploring how clay can be manipulated and the skills they may need when creating their own sculptures.
We looked at and learnt about Barbara Hepworth's abstract sculptures and how she carved them out of wood and stone. We then, looked at how clay is a great material to create sculptures from in school as it easily manipulated and you can do lots with it such as; create slabs, coils, ball, pinch it, smooth it, attach parts using 'score and slip' technique and much more. They will be creating sculptures inspired by nature and Barbara Hepworth's abstract style.
